Materials
The materials a trainer brings should be colorful, bright, attention getting.
Training people in the workforce today needs to be as much a show as a
business meeting.  Think about it.  Most people today have cable or
satellite dishes at their homes.  They are used to a multimedia experience
every night.  Quite frankly they expect more out of safety training and we
safety people ought to give it to them.

PowerPoint Rule - if your PowerPoint program is meant to be shown on a
computer, use a light background.  If your PowerPoint program is meant for
a large screen, use a dark background.  Produce the words at least 32
point font.  This way everyone can see them.

When Presenting
Look people in the eye.  This will convince them of your sincerity.  Do your
homework.  Know your subject through and through.  Safety Training is
much like coaching.  People expect you to have the answers and a plan.

Be honest!  If you don't know, say so.  Commit to getting the answers and
follow through.  Remember one thing, people can tolerate flaws in our
personality and our programs, but what they can't tolerate is arrogance.
Real sincerity will help you to have a real affect on peoples safety
performance.

Be a good listener.  You might not be able to solve the worlds problems,
but people like it whenever they feel they have been heard.  They feel that
at least someone understands.  Feelings are very much a part of a safety
program.  Remember that old saying "Safety is an attitude".

Engage the audience.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and expect right
answers.  After all, this is a training session.  It doesn't hurt to drill them on
the answers.  By the time you get to the test, they will know the subject.

Lastly, have a good time.  If you or your PowerPoints make them laugh, its a
good thing.  Psychologists tell us that laughter triggers a reward feeling in
the brain.  Laughter also causes us to take in more oxygen and stay alert
and awake :)!
