Dear Wade,
I know that I have mentioned this to you before, but training stands out as one of the most difficult
tasks to accomplish in the drilling and servicing industry. I find that too many companies call their
crews in and run through some training so that the documentation will be on file. (Sometimes, the
workers are sleeping. Sometimes, they will not speak up and ask questions.) If used properly, the
Roughneck 101 Workbooks are industry specific and make training simple and more complete. The
material and illustrations are presented in a way that beginners can understand and more
experienced workers can be reminded. The tests provide documentation that the material was
covered and understood. I particularly like the fact that the books involve the supervisors as well as
the workers. Without supervisor support the best safety training will fail.
It is hard to believe that the workbooks have so much information packed into 100 pages. I could
spend hours reading and reviewing regulations and other safety manuals and not get as much as I
get from your books. I use them as reference materials when I find things out in the field that do not
look quite right.
The days of throwing out safety information and hoping that workers understand are falling by the
wayside. The field is becoming more professional and your books prove it.
Also, I just took a look at your Hazard Recognition Book. You never cease to amaze me. There were a
lot of hazards that I would not have caught. I think that this book may prove to be your best work. Good

When we first approached Wade about the Roughnecking 101 Workbook we expressed that we
liked the workbook but it just didn’t match our policies. Wade said “no problem, we will change it
to fit your policies”. That is exactly what we did. We worked together and made the graphical
elements fit what our company wanted to teach our employees. We even changed the title and the
front page graphic to show our employees our commitment to their training.
We then beta tested the workbooks on our employees with good success. Afterward we made
changes and additions that we discovered would be more beneficial to our operations. We also
increased the difficulty of the testing and added more hands on certification. From the beginning
we recognized that challenging our employees to grow in their knowledge of basic roughneck
skills would create a more efficient and safe operation.
