Safety BLOG
This 'Safety Blog'  will serve as an information page and will give insight into the many projects we are working on.
Updates to the pages will occur when possible.  Eventually I may install a way to comment on these thoughts.

Deadly Explosion Rocks Oil Well
Last Update: 8/27 10:32 pm

An explosion at an oil field just north of Bristow kills one man and puts three other
workers in the hospital.

Bristow police and Creek County Sheriff deputies responded to fire after 10 am
Wednesday morning.  Bristow firefighters put out the flames in less than two
hours.

Deputies say crews from two local oil companies were sealing the well with
cement.  Oil and natural gas spewed up from the well and that's when the fire
started.
Christopher Hyde of Stroud, Oklahoma was standing at a platform was forced to jump out and later died.  Two other workers were
treated at a Tulsa hospital.  Neighbors could see smoke billowing over the trees.
"You never know if the fire was going to spread this way or what was going to happen," Larry Smith said.

Creek County Sheriff deputies’ say there is no official cause yet.

“Some of the workers believe that one of the trucks may have backfired igniting the oil and gas," Michael Carter said.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration workers will determine the official cause of death.
Comment : The articles and video Ive seen about this makes you wonder why he didn't come out of
the derrick on the geronimo.  This is really tragic.

Note:  I received a study on fatalities in the oilfield from NIOSH.  It shows that the majority of fatalities and a significant portion of
accidents are occurring with Derrickmen.  Is that what you see in your company data.  If so would the industry be willing to
support a derrickman certification program (workbook)?  If so, email your opinion to me at:
Wade@GraphicSafety.com .  Also,
email me if you think it is a bad idea or if you have your own certification program for this.  As always I don't share that
information and I won't send you spam.
Thanks, - Wade

9-12-08 AP Article

This is an AP article that came outrecently  'US Oilfield Deaths Rise Sharply'

We have examined her facts and it appears that she is statistically correct.  However,
several of us have objections to her conclusions in that article.  There will be a
response to that article here in this 'Safety Blog' and on other web sites soon.

9-9-08 Cement Barrel for Geronimo Anchor

How do you anchor your geronimo escape device.  API RP 54 states that the anchor
'must be capable of withstanding 3000 # of pull.  There are several alternative
methods out there.  There is a very practical solution outline on page # 85 of my
'Roughnecking 101' Workbook.
