Illustrating text has a long history in the world.  It is thought that Monks sought to promote better understanding of biblical text
by illustrating the pages with graphical examples during the renascence period.  Earlier illustrators communicated through
carvings in stone, wood and iron.  There is something very basic and good about making what you want to say very plain and
obvious.  Sometimes I think we are so smart today that we forget that.  We tell a guy to do something but he really only
understood about 20% of what was said.  Instead We should show people the way through good illustration.

Safety Policy vs Relevant Training

Why build good quality relevant training?
Training is where it is at in safety.  Policies don't matter if your employees don't know what they are.  Policies that are not followed create
liability.  Our philosophy is to keep safety policy manuals very small.  Throw everything else into a training program.  You should use a JSA
manual as a usable, changeable, training tool.   Next develop a workbook and/or PowerPoint that illustrates exactly what you want employees
to do.  Use graphics to "show them" rather than just "tell them".  We believe in the workbooks as an on-the-job training tool that gets results.
We are developing several more workbooks for various oilfield operations.  Several of these books should be available late summer 2007.

I firmly believe that it is best to have an
illustration to point to so that you can instruct
an employee where not to stand.
