You often hear in the oilfield the disdain people have for
engineers. But without good engineers we would have
never gotten as far as we have gotten in the oilfield.
This page is all about people who believe they are
engineers without the benefit of having any training. Take
a look at all this 'Bad Engineering and try not to laugh'.
This guy obviously felt he could make it work with the materials at
hand. He's got places to go and needed a fifth wheel. Fifth Wheel
Flexible Rig !?! Maybe too flexible.
"Just because you can,
does not mean you should"
This is an example of poor boy engineering. A lot of operations
resembled this in the past.
"Do you think we should tie those cylinders down?". "Oh, no! They are heavy enough".
"They won't go anywhere?". - famous last words.
If you look closely enough at this picture you
will see the middle brace is missing. It is
also hard to tell but because the other braces
are handling too much of the load, the
beams the braces are attached to are
buckling. There is a reason the engineers
designed 3 braces for the weight of the
doghouse.
The design here is to provide as much
difficulty and hazards as possible for one
area.
We don't need no engineers. Rope is just as
good as brake pads!?!
We probably take the safety measures we have here in the U.S.
for granted. Take a look at how production is handled in another
country to this day.
This proves that safety is not obvious. Usually a
culture only wants to change after experiencing an
intolerable level of accidents.
Don't you think it's a good idea to know the
limits of your equipment? Maybe even the
weight of the load you are about to lift? I think
these folks eventually came to that
conclusion.
Although it is apparent that this is not a safe
operation, you have to give respect to these
people for their ingenuity.
